Wren at Dusk

I have been working on this one for a while, trying to get the landscape to fit well with the wren.

I was just signing it this morning as I listened to the BBC Radio 4 PM programme, and there was a report on a ceremony in France to bury the last of the unknown Australian soldiers from the First World War. Relatives read out letters received from some of the soldiers and they were so moving, bringing tears to my eyes and I couldn't see to sign my painting.

As I looked at my painting of a bird in a tranquil landscape, I couldn't help but be aware of the sharp contrast in my life to those who go to war to enable me to stay at home in the safety of my studio and paint birds and landscapes. It would be good to be able to give something back....

I finally got these paintings back from my new framer in Cambridge. It's so good to get something finished and framed after all this time of trying to juggle the role of carer to my Father and being an artist! This is proof that I have been doing something!

My improvised studio!

This is where I am working right now! I ordered a daylight light which arrived yesterday and will make working here a lot easier. To be honest I don't have a lot of time, but I am managing to get some painting done in between hospital visits. It is keeping me sane, that's for sure!

I put out lots of bird seed and am so enjoying having my own resident robin and a couple of little wrens. There are also some lovely blue tit's in the garden, which will be the subject of my next painting.

I am gradually getting all my deadline pieces finished. I will be so glad. Then I can get on with lots of other new pieces. The colours here in New Mexico are glorious and I have started painting the cottonwoods again. Just love them.

Wren's are hugely significant to me. They just seem to show up on days that have been very important to me, for one reason or another. Consequently the wren was the first bird I ever painted and continue to paint. I am also in the process of creating some etchings of wrens. They are such delightful birds.
