This week I tried introducing colour to my drypoints using 'simultaneous colour printing' or the viscosity printing method, largely developed by
Stanley William Hayter. This is a method of introducing layers of colour onto one plate. What I did learn was that it isn't as easy as our wonderful technicians make it look! It is a process of using layers of colour on one plate, by changing the viscosity of the etching inks by adding copper plate oil. The roller needs to be wide enough in diameter to make one sweep across the plate. I did not manage this and that's why the colour is uneven. However, there are no hard and fast rules and I think it's a very exciting process for those wanting to use colour and maybe after a lot of practice I might get somewhere!
Here are some new drypoints in progress.

Rolling out the ink - good arm exercise as it took me a while to get it even! |

After laying down of the ink onto the plate it is placed on the press (note: I did not mess up the blankets!) |

How exciting! I am really enjoying your posts about drypoint.
Hi Maggie, I am glad that you are enjoying the posts. There is so much more to write, but I am meant to be writing my essay! Hope you are well?
Lynne- this is fantastic! First, I love the new direction and the subject matter. And to add color- how exciting. Please tell more- I'd love to try it!
Thanks Deborah... I am enjoying myself so much! The course is meant to be part time, but it's all consuming! The colour experiment is very much in the early stages and I don't really know what I am doing, but hoping to master it soon! Email me if you really want more details.
These are all so beautiful Lynne! I'm just catching up on my reading, so what a delight to see all of these gorgeous images!
Thanks Katherine, sorry for my delay too. This week has been crazy! Happy that you like the prints... I can't believe that in May I will have finished my first year.
